Dr Selva Mudaly won Eric Foskett Award

The Current president of the South African Institute of Environmental Health was honoured by International Federation of Environmental Health with Eric Foskett Award during World Congress which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 23 August 2022. This the premier award by IFEH to an Environmental Health Practitioner or association who has made notable highest contribution to the work of the Federation by helping it to fulfil its aims and objectives.

The award is named after Eric W Foskett who was the 1st Honorary Secretary of the IFEH in 1986. Eric Foskett was born in 1920 in Woodville, Derbyshire, England. When he left school, he went on to join the local environmental health department before serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. He returned from the army and worked in a number of local authorities in the North West of England, latterly as Chief Environmental Health Officer for the City of Manchester. He died on 07 August 2001.

For an Environmental Health Practitioner to be honoured with this award, he or she should have achieved outstanding work recognised nationally and internationally. After going through the records and what Dr. Mudaly did in the profession, the IFEH was satisfied that he has done something special which has great benefit to Environmental Health profession.

Dr Mudaly qualified as a public health inspector in 1974 and work in the public service for 40 years until he retire in 2014. Amongst others, Dr. Mudaly was the first Environmental Health Practitioner to be awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by Cape Peninsula University for Science and Technology in 2016. He served as a deputy chairperson in the Professional Board for Environmental Health within the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He played a major in the drafting and promulgating the Scope of Environmental Health in South Africa. He served as the President of IFEH from 2018 to 2020.
