4th Africa Congress on Environmental Health

MESSAGE FROM THE IFEH PRESIDENT:

DR. HENRY SCARLETT

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the International Federation of Environmental (IFEH), I wish to commend and congratulate the organizers of the Africa Congress to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 11-13 November 2024.

The theme for your Congress, “Environmental Health in Africa: Readiness for the 4th Industrial Revolution” is very appropriate and timely and reflects the deep concern and commitment of the Africa Region of the IFEH to environmental health. All industrial revolutions have impacted environmental health in good and bad ways.

Currently, climate change has been described as the existential issue of our time, with a myriad of environmental health challenges which have affected and will continue to affect especially developing countries, many of which are found in Africa.

The 4th Industrial revolution is upon us and will bring benefits and challenges to environmental health and the global environmental health workforce. I know you will discuss and debate issues related to the 4th Industrial Revolution and I commend the following topics for your consideration: “Smart planning and construction to make better use of the built environment, sustainable transport and logistics to increase mobility and connectivity, clean energy and utilities to improve efficiency of urban systems and the environment, urban health and resources to lower pollution, and resilient systems to enable cities and  countries to deal  environmental shocks and disasters”.

The 4th Industrial Revolution has been described as “the fastest-ever period of technological innovation”. We need to take advantage of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and drones, biotechnology, and others to make our environment more sustainable and livable. Despite its challenges, the 4th Industrial Revolution is exciting, especially for those who are amenable to change for the good of humanity. Environmental health should therefore be included in national, regional, and international agendas as we navigate the 4th Industrial Revolution. Best wishes for a very successful and illuminating Africa Congress.

Henroy P. Scarlett, Dr. PH, MPH, BHSc (Hons), REHS/RS, DAAS

President, IFEH
